Seattle and Vancouver Day 1

And we're off! Cindi and I had planned a trip to Vancouver several months ago. I would drive and we would stay in Cindi's time-share condo smack dab in the middle of downtown Vancouver. I had arranged with Nancy to stay with her and Sam on Saturday night and we early Saturday morning, we packed up the car and hit the road. Cindi had made some "Supernatural" themed CDs that we listened to, along with Jars of Clay and some James Taylor and whatever was in the front area of my car, as the rest of the CDs were buried in the back. The drive was long but luckily uneventful, other than getting turned round a bit getting off the freeway at Sam and Nancy's exit, and we made some good time. It was so wonderful to see the Bents and their lovely house in Bellvue. The fog was deep and heavy but that didn't keep us from heading into downtown Seattle to wander around.

It was necessary to get some drinks stat so we used the gift card Nancy gave us to eat and drink at Wild Ginger's, an Asian themed restaurant a few blocks away from Pike's Place. We shared the duck platter and on my sweet Jiminy Christmas was it delicious. They gave you these little buns and you made a sandwich with the duck, some cilantro and some plum sauce and then it's like a party of joy in your mouth. So freaking good.

We also wandered around a darkened Pike's Place, popped into the original Starbucks so that I could charge my phone up a bit, and then went down to wander about the waterfront and the giant (but smaller than the London Eye) ferris wheel that hadn't been there the last time I was in Seattle.

The next morning, we attended mass at St. James' Cathedral in downtown Seattle, close to the freeway. The church was gorgeous and while Cindi was taking pictures afterwards, one of the church members told me about the history of the church. It was a nice service- my first Catholic mass in a long time- and the front door reminded me a lot of the door to the Church of the Announciation in Nazareth. And then it was hitting the road!

Almost, that is. First, we stopped at a Starbucks in Everett to have a quick catch up with the Kirb-ster. Words cannot describe how lovely it was to see her and hear how well she is doing and to get a glimpse of what her life is like. She looked great and kept me laughing as she usually does and I'm so glad that things worked out so perfectly in getting to see her.

On a side note, we also introduced Cindi to this. Love it.

Then it was hitting the road for real. Getting through the border was not a big deal with the 60 mph speed limit between Seattle and the border drove me crazy! Our first stop of the day, because we couldn't check into our hotel until the mid-afternoon, was the UBC Apple Festival. We found a prime parking spot and while the Apple Festival was smaller than I expected, we were given free reign of the gorgeous Botanical Gardens, got to sample some apple hybrids, enjoyed the small natural remedies garden, and there was some very catchy and upbeat live music. It probably would have been more enjoyable if we had some Canadian money to pick up some apples or a pie or something but it was still a good way to pass the time before heading into downtown Vancouver and checking into our room.

The view from our room was freaking stunning. My window overlooked a line of red trees that would only get redder when the fog was out (which it would be often over the next week). There was a living room with a sofa, chair and table, as well as a TV/DVD player, fireplace and connection to a fully stocked kitchen and dining nook. There were two bedrooms and two bathrooms and plenty of space for two people. I'm not sure if I can ever go back to hostels again....

Because we didn't want to waste the remaining daylight and weren't that hungry, we headed out to explore the area. We were only two blocks away from St. Andrews, where Season 2's "House of Holy" was filmed. We didn't see a seance happening, but, unlike last time I was there, I was able to go inside and see the gorgeous stained glass windows. We also walked down to Canada Place and saw an unexpected outdoor exhibit on the War of 1812 and it's role in Canadian history. While in it of itself an interesting topic, locationally it seemed a bit off. It would be like California having an exhibit on the Revolutionary War. Historically interesting, locationally odd. I loved walking up and down Canada Place and seeing the bizarre and unique names of Canadian towns within the nine provinces. Our last stop was Gastown, a lovely place before it gets dark, and the Gastown Steam Clock. Which is just that. These two guys kept taking annoying pictures in front of the clock so I rudely stood in the back and made sure I was in all of their pictures. Don't make me get all passive-aggressive on you.... Just saying...

A lovely perk of having a full kitchen was that we could save a bunch of money and make our own dinner. Cindi made some amazingly delicious burritos that we had with chips and salsa and sangria while watching a few Supernatural episodes and doing research for the next day. We had a LOT planned for these five days!

Fall Fashion

I have really been enjoying putting together fun outfits now that the weather is getting a bit cooler and it's not as sunny. So I thought I'd post each outfit that I wore and where I got everything (and tell you whether or not it was expensive... hint... it probably wasn't).

dress: Ross (less than $13)
scarf: gift for Christmas from mom
tights: Target ($5)
boots: Burlington coat factory ($18)
cardigan: Target (less than $20)

scarf: Covet Garden Market (less than $3 with conversion)
jacket: free (Megan's friend was giving clothes away)
jeans: Ross ($8)
boots: Goodwill ($6)
shirt: no idea- I cannon remember what was under this, probably a white t-shirt (cheap)

jacket: Macy's ($16)
jean skirt: Lord knows, I've had it for eons
tights: Target ($3)
boots: Forever 21 ($30)

I didn't have to work today so it's slightly more casual
scarf: Covent Garden Market ($3)
t-shirt: Target (cheap- part of a package of 6)
coat: Oxford shop ($10)
jeans: Ross ($8)
flats: Burlington Coat Factory (also $8)

BONUS! I had a concert on Thursday night so I had to change :)
shirt: no idea.... I bought it ages and ages ago...
scarf: guess where... :)
pants: Ross ($12)
shoes: Payless (10)
Fun fact: the pants and shoes were purchased unexpectedly
when I was in Boise visiting over spring break and ended
up going to a nicer alumni event and had to go some last
minute shopping....

This was a quiet day spent working so totally casual
shirt: Old Navy ($4?)
jeans: Ross ($8)
boots: Hauser shoes online ($12?)

It's really nice to have fun clothes to mix and match and know that none of it was expensive (or just purchased years and years and years ago.... Maybe I should go shopping....)

30B430 #17- Complete!

#17!

Last night, Caitlin, Juliette, Jennie, and Tessa joined me in crossing my first Dirty Thirty event off of my list. All the ladies but Tessa met me at my house first and we snacked on "fall" dishes like cheese and crackers, caramel and apples, a really delicious salad that Caitlin made, and some veggies. It was a gorgeous, full-moon night, and not as cold as I thought it was going to be. Haunted World was PACKED- I think the experience would have been totally different if it was a darker night, slightly colder, and less busy. As we went through the maze, there was an Aspeger-y kid behind us who was totally obnixious, and there was a group of younger girls ahead of us that the "scary" people were drawn too, so we made it through a lot of haunted areas without any scares. So, I know now for the future to go on a less busy night.

Regardless, it was a nice full of hysterics and lots of screaming. The clown and doll room freaked me out because of the strobe lights but the real "fear" came from not knowing what was coming up or when someone would jump out at you. Then they would and you'd jump and shriek and then laugh. Tessa had some of the best reactions and she kept me stitches the entire time. "How do they know my name!?!?!?!" might have been my favorite quote of the night.

Even though my throat was thrashed, we were pretty dusty, there were too many people, and I had a long drive the next morning, it was totally worth it. I would definitely do it again next year! Thanks, lovely ladies, for joining me in checking my first thing off the list!

Also, this is hysterical and I want to go through a Haunted House with these two....

Random Events

Lots of stuff has ben happening and I have picturse for some and none for others. I need to be better about taking pictures. I used to be but I've gotten awful at it... Ugh, come back, picture-happy Michal!

Here's what I've been up to this last month or so.

-Two weekend ago was Homecoming and it was a lot of fun. On Thursday, a bunch of people got together for Trivia and I was on a team with Katie, Caitlin, Becky, Dustin, Justin and a random freshman who held her own against the adults. We didn't win but we certainly put up a good fight. Friday night was a tailgate party with lots of food that honestly wasn't that great but lots of chatting with alums. The volleyball game was at 7 but I'm not sure that we ended up there until 8:00? Everything had been packed up and cleaned up by the time we made it over there. Saturday was Taste of the Harvest, which was always fun, especially with the different wineries that came to pour. Taste of the Harvest is always good for seeing alums and people from the area that don't come out for other events and I ran into a bunch of lovely people i hadn't seen in a few years. There was also a Alumni-Faculty reception and I have to say, the best part of that was the breaded and fried macaroni and cheese balls. Um, heaven in your mouth. Seriously.

- I volunteered for the Saint-Chapelle wine run on Sunday morning and had a 6:45-9:30 shift. The winery was pitch black when I arrived (I actually blew past it and had to turn around in Marsing and use my map to make sure I turned in at the right place) and the girls I was working with and I were putting together timing chips on bibs and passing bibs out to the marathoners in the dark. On the plus side, it wasn't cold and only a bit breezy. And on the other plus side, I can get into another one of their races for free now so that's nice. And I got a shirt and a wine glass to boot.

-I've been hitting up the market as much as I can. Last week, Tessa, Juliette, Caitlin and I got coffee and Crux and then wandered up and down the streets and also popped into the Capitol for a bit. I got some lovely squashes for pretty cheap and last night, Juliette and Caitlin came over to make soup with the squash. The acorn squash and pear one came out really well and I haven't tried the other one yet but I want to blend it a little more and then give it a try.

-We had our first Happy Hour of the year, sitting out on the patio at Stewart's and had such a great time. We had some new people show up and they are fantastic additions to our fun group.

-Speaking of fun groups, a bunch of C of I faculty members and their spouses got together at Katie and Chris' house last Saturday to play games and try Chris' brews and share food. I made some bruschetta with fresh tomatoes, fresh mozarella, and fresh basil, and it was delicious. We played that game where we put a bunch of famous names into a hat. The first round, you could describe the person in anyway you wanted to. The second round, you could only use charades, and the third was using just one word. Needless to say, it was absolutely hysterical. Our top favorites were :Ann Veal (her?), Gene Parmesan (AHHHHHHH, HE GOT ME AGAIN!!!!!!!!), Lonesome Larry, John McGee and Ms. Devine (Katie got on the list twice!) I love this group of friends and seriously laughed so hard.

-I dog-sat for some friends last week and their dogs are so affectionate. I had Layla in my lap nearly the whole weekend and Oliver was constantly fighting for attention. And he is maybe the most ADD-fetch player I've ever seen. I love it. Bailie came over and enjoyed playing with Oliver for a bit as well.
